My product is a unique film in its own right. My product represents social groups and issues by using extensive character and world building conventions such as costume, dialogue, acting, and location. In this case, my product is representing the upper class of society and the apathy and bigotry towards others one may develop with economic prosperity. Our main character is a wealthy man living on the coast of south Florida. The use of camera shots establishes the setting as a large modern house with luxury cars in the front  and a designer interior within. The use of costumes, a blue and white loose-fit floral shirt with white linen pants gives the appearance of a wealthy and laid back man who cares for the luxuries in life. On the other hand the antagonist is seen in a typical suit worn by office workers with a dirty rag over his shoulder and dirt smeared hands, clearly representing his lower economic status. The use of dialogue shows his apathy towards those he deems as unimportant. This is shown through his interaction with the antagonist where the latter asks for help but the main character is more concerned with his meal and not the possible ill situation the other character may be in. He quickly tries to end the conversation and ends with saying “sorry” though his delivery of the line is lacking in any sympathy. Through acting this is exemplified further. When the antagonist is asking for help and trying to explain his situation, the main character fails to even maintain eye contact, opting to look back and check on his burning meal rather than listen. At the conversation’s end he quickly reaches for the doorknob and tries to quickly shut the door. This represents the disconnect between the upper and lower classes in society due to disparity of wealth between them. The elements of my production such as its website, social media profile, and ad posters, use specifically chosen images and colors to create a sense of branding. My production is primarily an action film at its core. Therefore the images and color scheme of the website and posters reflect this. Images of weapons are used to represent the sort of film this production is since weapons do play a major role. The lack of actors' faces in the website and poster elements are meant to create a sense of ambiguity. When viewers see the elements of this production they are not concerned with the actors or with the story. They are exposed only to the potential action and anticipation of what this film could be. And that is the goal, action above all else. It is about a hit man and what he does. Ironically It is within this simplicity that this production finds its unique look. The message and the atmosphere could never be mistaken for anything else. Even though the main character may not be the hit man he is in fact the focus of the film, and the elements of this product reflect that. The colors in each element; red, black, and white, are used to create an image of intensity through the brightly colored red, and yet create a dark atmosphere of mystery through the black. This color scheme as well as images of various weapons such as the pistol, is used consistently throughout all the elements of my production to create its unique branding. Each element is made to look unique yet belonging to the same brand, and have the same aesthetic. Viewers do not watch this production for the main character, they are drawn to the hit man. The hit man is the brand. My product engages with the audience through its highly interactive website as well as its two social media pages. My product seeks to engage its audience beyond passive consumption. The goal is for the audience to be invested in the film before they’ve even sat in the theater. The website was made to be extremely detailed and highly interactive. Everything the audience may want to know can be found through just a few clicks. And anything they do not find on the website can be asked and answered by the producer and director himself if they just call the number found in the contacts section. The website was made in such a way that it encourages the audience to ask questions and peak their interest. As you scroll you find more and more information about the film. The Instagram page for the production is also a major factor for audience engagement. The Instagram includes behind the scenes photos and footage of the choreography. The audience can see exactly how the film was made and how the action was brought to life. This does wonders for audience engagement because it makes the audience see the process which makes the production feel even more real. Despite the fact that it is in fact a film, the audience sees the action is real. The events within the film, although fictional, are not impossible or at all out of place in the real world. Ironically it is this realism that allows the audience to get lost in the fictional world and story. Another major factor of the Instagram page is that it only shows glimpses into the film. This further aids with audience engagement because it leaves the audience wanting to see more. They want to see how that action is translated to the film. They have essentially been allowed access to the rough draft and now they want to see it polished and completed. My research informed my product on how it uses and challenges conventions and allowed me to produce a production that is unique in both the genre of action and unique in its own right. I did thorough in depth research on the standard conventions found in action films. Conventions such as camera angles that add intensity to a scene. How different camera movements create confusion or add power to a fight sequence. Especially how fight scenes are made and the process of making the choreography. In studying these conventions and analyzing various films within the genre, I was able to use these standard conventions to create a unique product by blending the best of what already exists to make something new. However, despite this I did not want to deliver a product that people had already seen. In order to make this film unique I wanted to break action movie conventions and include a twist akin to those found in a thriller or horror film. This twist is comedy. Many productions incorporate both action and comedy such as the films from the Marvel franchise, however my film is unique in that the comedy is only incorporated at the end. The comedy at the end changes how the audience views the entire film up until that point. It changes the tone in an instant and suddenly the heavy and intense atmosphere has been replaced with a much lighter and less serious one. Ironically it is this comedy that adds even more meaning and draws even more attention to the action. The comedic timing at the end breaks standard conventions of action films but because of it the action sequences seem even more apparent because of the ridiculous circumstances for which it occurred. This is what makes my production so unique. It was through both following and breaking conventions of action that this film was born.
